Alexander Schwarzman

Born on the 30th of September 1967, place of birth Moskou, World Champion in 1998, 2007, 2008 and 2017. KNDB rating 1588, FMJD rating 2393.

From an early age on, Alexander was a very good player. However, it took a while for him to become World Champion.

Since 1994 he has qualified for the World Cup through the Russian Championship and he has always been in the top. He became fifth at the World Cup in 1994. In 1996 in Abidjan he placed third. He was 31 years of age when he was crowned World Champion for the first time. In 1997 he convincingly won the World Cup tournament in Stadskanaal at the age of 30.

The next match against Alexei Tchizizov in 1998, in the hometown of Chizhov, Alexander Schwarzman won. The results after that were varying, he became World Champion 9 years later and again 8 years after that. With a bit of luck, Alexander placed himself for the final of the World Cup of 2017 in Tallinn, in which he overtook the former champions Valneris and Chizhov. With his 50 years, he was one of the oldies, who, according to debutant Wouter Wolff, never played a single move too many. As the champion said: “I only play if my opponent plays’’. And it must be said, at the scarce moments he pulls out all the stops, he plays amazingly.

Roel Boomstra about his opponent: “Schwarzman is one of the Russian draughts legends and a good opponent. In the preliminary round of the previous World Cup he almost did not qualify and he played sparingly. But at times he also showed his great class. It will undoubtedly be a fascinating match.”

Schwarzman won 3 out of 9 regular games against Boomstra. The last time at Urk, The Netherlands, in 2011 during the WC. In Peking 2014 Boomstra had his revenge by a victory the superblitz-tournament of the World Mind Games. They were memorable games.

Schwarzman won the world title four times. Twice in a match: against Tsjizjov in Izjevsk 1998 and against Georgiev in Twente 2009. Twice in een tournament: in Hardenberg 2007 en in Tallinn 2015.
