Roel Boomstra deals first blow

06-01-2019   Auke Scholma for DVHN  /  translation Pascal Stil

GRONINGEN  In the sixth game for te world title draughts charged at each other without any hesitation. With a fierce attack Boomstra brought his opponent to his knees. With time running low, Schwarzman couldn’t find a save and had to resign after 61 moves.

After a sharp opening, the roles became clear quickly. Just like in the exciting third game, in which Schwarzman narrowly avoided defeat, Boomstra used the black pieces to go on the attack. Schwarzman avoided by going to the forward field 15 and must have sensed opportunities for an active surrounding game. Also in the demonstration room, Auke Scholma, Harm Wiersma and the spectators were long in uncertainty, who had the advantage? Boomstra was repeatedly forced to play sharp moves to keep the attack going, but found them time after time. Just when Schwarzman thought to have a strong grip, his hopes were quashed. This lead to the Russian using a lot of time. Specially the potential transition to unclear endgames took big bites out of the time. When Schwarzman decided to get out of these plans and didn’t choose the best way to simpify, he had only two minutes left to find a hidden defense.

Position after 50 moves

Where he miraculously succeeded to do that in the third game, this time around he failed. The deciding mistake was 51.34-29? after which there is no way to save a point anymore. White should have gone for 51.41-37 18-23 52.43-38 23-28 53.34-29! And play the sacrifices 36-31 followed by 38-32 or 29-23 followed by 37-32 or 31 cause difficulties for black. Competitive draughts is however sport, and not science. Boomstra’s victory was well deserved. With this he made an important step towards the title, but there is still a long way to go. The match can only be won after winning three games, as the rules say. Today from 12 noon, the match continues in the Van Swinderen Huys in Groningen.
